Imagine you're the VP of Content and Product Development for Tony Robbins.

That is an impressive title. And if you're like me, you're sitting there thinking, "Man that's the life!"

Imagine you're a successful person working with this superstar in personal development, but still, something is missing.

That's the exact situation Pam Hendrickson, our newest Kajabi hero, found herself in.

She screeched into her driveway at 8 o'clock every night, brakes squealing, and heart racing. She held her breath, hoping that she was there just in time to tell her boys good night.

She may have had a killer job working with amazing people, but something was still not right. She was missing so much of her family's lives. Even though she had what some people may consider a dream job, it still wasn't enough.

Things finally clicked for Pam just a few days before her mom passed away. Pam's mother told her something that would change the course of Pam's life.

"Life is fleeting, and that's what makes it so precious."

Pam realized she was wasting time.

Time that she wanted to spend with her boys.

She'd had enough. She wasn't missing another second. Pam decided that to start her own business online.

When you're stuck in the cycle of trading your time for money, even if you have a great job, it can be so hard to get out. Birthdays, vacations, Christmases, first words, first steps, there are so many things you miss while you're at work.

So I want you to think about a question:

How much is your job costing you?

You may be bringing home a paycheck, but for what? So you can afford a house that you don’t live in most of the day? So you can make payments to drive a car back and forth to work? So you can afford daycare for your kids and make a living?

When you think about it, it's madness.

Money can be earned back after you spend it. But your time, hours of your life, spent away from doing the things you love and being with the people you love...

Once it's gone, you will never get it back.

And I'm here to tell you that you can stop the cycle. Our Kajabi Heroes prove that. You can break out of the system stop trading your time for money. You can create your own business. You can spend your life being with people you love and doing the things that you love.

Since Pam started her own business, she's worked with all kinds of people. She's helped them create content, products, and courses about anything you can imagine.

Besides Tony Robbins, she's worked with Success Magazine to help create a product based on the basketball legend John Wooden. She also helped Jordan Belfort, the Wolf of Wall Street himself, create a course on ethical sales tactics. Pam has even helped a funeral director create a grief management course for hurting people.

She has seen it all.

So where do you find your online course idea?

Skills you already have:

Say you're a beast at Excel, or you're the best dog trainer in your town. We even have a Kajabi customer who built a course about teaching horses ballet! I’ve seen it all.

Whether it's something you've learned or something that comes naturally to you, someone out there wants to learn that skill. And you can show them how to do it.

Your current job:

Even your regular 9-5 job has the potential to be your big business idea.

Pam worked with a man who does landscaping for a living. He also sells courses showing people how to do landscaping as a business. And that's how he makes an income during the slow season.

Hobbies that you enjoy:

You can get so creative with this. If you like to fly drones, sew, or even if you have great stats on first-person shooter games, you can build a course.

You don't have to be the next Tony Robbins. You just have to be you.

But I want to be completely honest with you...

I think you already know that.

I'm convinced that you already have a passion that you want to turn into an online business, but one thing is holding you back.

YOU are getting in YOUR way.

You may be sitting there thinking, "What do you mean my that? I really want this?"

There is one thing that always comes up in these interviews. One thing that was a huge obstacle for nearly all of our Kajabi Heroes.

So what is it?

What is the one thing that will kill your business before you even get started?

Perfectionism: The Death of Your Dreams

Think about the above statement for a second.

Most fears and all obstacles when it comes to starting your own business have root in perfectionism.

Let's look at some of the ways perfectionism is holding you back from living your dreams. And then we'll go over some of the solutions and the first steps you should take to start your own business today.

The all or nothing trap.

We're going to cover this one first because it is a huge one.

"I have to have the best (fill in the blank) to start my own business."

You can put anything in that little blank space. I have to have the best:

Video camera.

Sound equipment.

Lighting.

Editing skills.

In fact, we just wrote a blog article about the many ways you can use your phone to produce all of your video content.

Yet, you can even be so deep into 'the all or nothing trap' that you put things in there like:

"I have got to have the best hairstyle or makeup for my videos to start my own business."

It may sound crazy, but it happens every day. Once you see what that blank is for you. You can understand how little sense it makes.

So before we move on, I want you to get a piece of paper. And on this piece of paper I want you to fill in your blank.

I have to have the best (fill in the blank) to start my own business."

Fill in as many blanks as you need. Fill up the piece of paper if you have to.

Once you finish, I want you to take a step back look at what you've written.

These are the things holding you back. And these are the things that you can overcome.

You don't need a big budget.

Pam sank over $65,000 into her business when she started.

Out of that $65,000 Pam made money, but a lot of her profits were eaten up by expenses.

The technology that we have today makes creating courses so inexpensive. You have everything you need within arm's distance of you right now.

Chances are you already have a smartphone and access to a computer. And that's all you need.

Bottom line.

I did a piece not too long ago on Felicia Ricci. All she used to shoot her first course was her iPhone. And she still uses that content today.

You can always upgrade your video and sound equipment later, but starting out: grab your phone, film your course, and get it out there.

Perfect makes you un-relatable.

One thing stuck out to me in Pam's interview.  She spent all night for two nights editing out audio mistakes for Tony Robbins. And when she goes to them with these pages full of errors, they looked at her and asked: "what are you doing?"

All that work she put into making the content perfect wasn't necessary.

What can we learn from this?

Embrace imperfection.

One of the best ways to relate to people is to be yourself mistakes, blemishes, faults and all. Put it all out there for your audience to see.

When you do that, you will connect people in a real way. This transparency makes you human; it makes you approachable, and it will show people that anything is possible because you're a real person helping them with their real problems.

Imperfection is an asset.

Imperfection will give you a connection with your audience that will take you farther than any expensive equipment ever can.

Chasing perfection will always make you lose sight of what matters.

Perfectionism, a lot of times, is just procrastination wrapped up in a different package.

It's a waste of time resources and value that the world needs. I think budding entrepreneurs are experts at chasing rabbits.

Say you're about to launch your site with Kajabi and you get this little voice in the back of your mind: "I need a better color scheme."

So you spend hours looking for the perfect colors, tweaking everything to match just right, and you don't even get your course out there.

Sound like something you'd do?

Your course is not about your color scheme!

Online courses are about helping people and creating the life you want.

That's the big picture.

Perfectionism puts all your focus somewhere else, and you lose sight of what matters.

Why do you want to do this?

Write it down.

What is your big picture?

Maybe you want to earn an extra 500 bucks on the side to afford dance class for your kids. Maybe you want to quit your job and work on the go while you travel the world.

Think about the people you want to help: people who need your course. How many lives can you change?

That's what matters.

It's not lighting.

It's not HD video.

It's not editing out every single mistake.

It's about your goals and the people you're going to help.

And if you lose sight of that... if you let yourself get hung up on the things that your inner perfectionist tells you are important, your business will never make it off the ground.

Think about the funeral director's grief management course.

How many struggling people did this he help through a crippling time? If this funeral director would've let his perfectionism run wild, chances are, the grief management course wouldn't have survived. And he wouldn't have helped anyone.

It's time for YOU to get out of YOUR way!

So how do you get started?

It boils down to two things:

  1. Take your idea.
  2. Teach people.

That's it.

"But what about marketing?"

That something you can learn as you go, but if you don't have an idea even the best marketing strategies in the world wouldn't do you any good without an idea.

And don't overlook partnerships either. You can take an idea and team up with someone to accomplish more than you could on your own. But you have to start somewhere.

When it comes to online courses, you won't get anywhere until you're helping other people. And that's where the best ideas come from.

What do people already ask you about?

What do people always need your help with?

Not even Pam can tell you each specific step that you need to take. But if you can get rid of your perfectionism, you can take this formula and build your own course.

What is your perfectionism keeping you from?

Take a moment with me to imagine your dream life.

Where do you want to be one day?

Now imagine that life is in the distance with a path leading up to it, but when you start on your journey, a massive wall forms. Each brick in this wall is made up the sentences you wrote down earlier.

I have to have the best (fill in the blank)...

The scary part is, you put every single brick there yourself.

This wall is perfectionism.

And the only way you're going to get where you want to go is to tear down.

It may sound simple, but simple doesn't mean it's going to be easy.

You see, you spent a lot of time building this wall.

It may have been a matter of days or weeks; you may have been building this wall most of your life without even realizing it. So much of you invested into this wall that it scares you to take it apart.

But once you start, brick by brick, the wall is going to get smaller and smaller. And you'll see that once you get rid of it, the path is clear.

That's what Kajabi is all about. Helping people tear down that wall of perfectionism, live their dreams, and help other people.

Are YOU ready?

Are you willing to let Kajabi help you tear down that wall today?

What is the biggest brick in your wall of perfectionism?

I have to have the best (fill in the blank) to create my online course.

Let me know in the comments below.

Then let me know how you're going to get yourself out of your way and overcome that obstacle.

I can't wait to discuss this with you in the comments.
